|The issue of the invitation of former President Chen by NATMA as a keynote speaker in September of 2008 was brought up and deliberated on in the court of the City of Taipei, as reported by the Taiwan News today. Mr. Chen had applied for a passport in order to come to the United States to speak with NATMA's members. Upon learning about the application for a passport, the judge made a preposterous decision to continue the detaining former President Chen against his will and right, using the excuse that Mr. Chen was a flight risk.
How a rational judge comes to this conclusion based on his speculation of the timing of invitation is beyond me. In order to set the record straight, I will fully disclose the sequence of events regarding this invitation chronologically.
In November 2007, I asked Professor Alexander Young on his Taiwan trip to visit Mr. Lee and to invite President Chen to be our Key note speaker when he stepped down because we believed that his life experience of emerging from a poor farming community in southern Taiwan to becoming the president of our beloved nation would be an inspiration to us all. Mr. Chen graciously accepted our invitation. On May 2008, a friendly reminder letter was sent to President Chen and he again confirmed he would be coming to speak and planned on making an appearance. After this, we heard no word from President Chen and finally in july, we decided to pursue a substitute keynote speaker.
It appears there is no longer any valid reasons to continue the detention of former president.
Thank you for the attention!
President of NATMA
